Mumba Hails Growth of Northern Region Netball League
Eng. Vitumbiko Mumba says the conclusion of the 2026 Northern Region Netball League has shown the growing contribution of the competition to netball development in the region and at national level.
Mumba, the league sponsor, was speaking after Mzimba Queens were crowned champions at the end of the 2026 season at Rosedale Court in Mzuzu.
He said he was encouraged by the increase in participation, with 98 teams taking part this season compared to 88 last year.
“That shows that the league is growing. Participation is just overwhelming,” said Mumba.
He also highlighted the progress of teams and players from the league at national and international level.
One team from the Northern Region competition finished third in the national league, while two players from the regional league represented Malawi at the African Netball Championship in Kenya.
Mumba said these developments demonstrate the role the regional competition is playing in providing a pathway for players and teams to compete at higher levels.
“It is very exciting that the sport in the north is going forward,” he said.
Mumba says the growth of the league has also highlighted the need for better facilities for players.
He has pledged to support the construction of a changing-room facility and an ablution block at Rosedale Court.
He said the project will follow the required processes, with his architect expected to survey the allocated site before construction starts.
Looking beyond the 2026 season, Mumba believes continued investment is necessary to strengthen netball development in Malawi.
“Netball has always put Malawi on the map from time immemorial. So we need to invest more in netball as far as sport is concerned.”
For Mumba, the increase in participation and the progress of players and teams from the regional league to national and international competition provide a clear indication of the competition’s growing impact.
