Vanessa Sisters Reserves Win Inaugural Mukuru Under-21 National Netball Cup
Vanessa Sisters Reserves have been crowned the inaugural Mukuru Under-21 National Netball Cup champions after defeating Young Eagles 48–35 in the final played at the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS) Sports Complex in Blantyre.
The Lilongwe-based side took early control of the match, leading 15–7 at the end of the first quarter and 23–17 at half-time. Despite resistance from Young Eagles, Vanessa Reserves maintained their dominance to secure a 33–27 lead in the third quarter before sealing a 13-basket victory.
Goal shooter Sarai Chisale led the scoring with 28 baskets from 30 attempts, while goal attacker Shira Nkhoma added 17 from 22. Kukoma Diamonds Babies finished third after defeating Tigresses Cubs 55–43 in the third-place playoff.
Vanessa Reserves also dominated the individual awards, with Shira Nkhoma named Player of the Match and Tournament Best Shooter, while Mphatso Banda claimed both the Best Centre Player and Most Valuable Player awards. Sophie Kamanga of Kukoma Diamonds Babies was named Tournament Best Defender, and George Masiye received the Best Umpire award.
Speaking during the closing ceremony, NAM President Vitumbiko Gubuduza said the tournament has strengthened Malawi’s netball development pathway by providing competitive exposure for emerging talent. Mukuru Malawi Country Manager Pride Chiwaya, whose company invested K60 million into the competition, expressed satisfaction with the quality of play and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting youth netball development.
